Mahogany Books (National Harbor)

Books. Community. Culture.

MahoganyBooks is a family-owned independent bookstore dedicated to celebrating and sharing the literature, history, and culture of the African diaspora. Founded online in 2007 by Derrick and Ramunda Young, MahoganyBooks quickly became a go-to destination for readers seeking works by, for, and about people of African descent. In 2017, they opened their first physical location in Washington, District of Columbia, and expanded to a second store in National Harbor, Maryland in 2021. Their mission is to connect readers to writers, foster community, and empower individuals through the power of books and storytelling.

MahoganyBooks is more than just a bookstore—it’s a movement. The shop boasts one of the deepest inventories of Black literature online, hosts hundreds of author events and community programs, and is known for its “Books for the Block” give-back program, which donates books to local youth. The owners’ passion for culture, literacy, and entrepreneurship is reflected in every aspect of the business, from curated reading lists to national media features. Whether you’re looking for a bestseller, a classic, or a new voice, MahoganyBooks is all about building community, promoting literacy, and celebrating the richness of Black stories.
